Our Bellingham Tarot Meetup group met the other night. I have to say that I'm so happy that I took the plunge and decided to start this group late last year. I love my Tarot conferences, like BATS and LATS and the Readers Studio, but I wanted to create Tarot community here at home. And it's happening!
We have all levels of Tarot aficionados at the meetup, from complete beginners through seasoned professionals. The more experienced people are happy to share what they know, and the "newbies" get to see all the different styles and methods and opinions out there. No Tarot fundamentalists allowed in our group! :)
We have a loose structure for each meeting: a check-in where we go around the circle and each person shares a Tarot "new and good"; a time for questions and answers; a topic that includes a bit of teaching from me or someone else; and time to practice reading skills. This last bit is either breaking up into partners and reading for each other, or doing a big group reading. Lately we also decided to meet an hour earlier, so that the first hour is socializing and potluck. This works really well too.
Now Holly Voley has joined us, and I'm thrilled.
DragonSong and I met Holly at BATS last year, even though I'd known who she was for years, of course. (Holly is an expert on Pamela Colman Smith and the Rider Waite Smith deck, and I've been privileged to see her collection of over 1000 Tarot decks!) I'd been bugging her for months to come but she had a conflict with her writing group. And I think she's glad she finally made it. Hope she will forgive me for repeating what she wrote on our message board:
"Entirely too much fun with entirely too many great people!! Woo-hoo!! There IS Tarot in Bellingham! Wonderful discussion about how to ask a question. Wonderful exchange of perspectives. Wunnerfull, wunnerfull (I'm channelling Lawrence Welk right now, please save me!). Welcoming, open, challenging, enlightening. AND we did a spiffy reading for the group. How much better can this get? Well, we're gonna have another one next month, topic to be decided. Joanna is a Tarot Goddess for making this happen. Why oh why did I wait so long? Because I'm dumb! But no longer. Good eats, good location, good people. My Tarot Batteries are recharged and I shouldn't get my usual reading of "Get off your dead ass and DO something Holly." I just helped do something great!"
Yes, she did help to do something great! Holly's a triple fire sign and I'm a triple earth sign, and together I think we make a pretty good team!
We invite you to join us in person if you're in Bellingham on the second Wednesday of the month, or on our message boards if you're far away. You can join our Meetup even if you live far away (Beth OwlsDaughter in NC and Corrine Kenner in MN are both members!) and join in the discussions on the boards. It's free!
Check us out here. Hope to see you on the boards!
